Why might ContactsLaw close automatically?

ContactsLaw includes a mechanism to automatically close the application in response to various scenarios. When an automatic shutdown is triggered, a pop-up message is displayed to the user with an accompanying countdown (usually 30 seconds or more) to allow work to be saved.

There are two main situations which may require an automatic shutdown of ContactsLaw:
  1. Licensing problem
Due to ContactsLaw's licensing model, each running copy of the application must maintain a connection to the DDM service on the local network. If this connection is lost (either due to a network problem, license expiry or no remaining licenses), ContactsLaw must close to prevent unauthorised use of the software. ContactsLaw will repeatedly attempt to reconnect to the DDM service during the shutdown timer, and the shutdown will be cancelled if this is successful.

  2. Administrative shutdown
The DDM service provides network administrators with the ability to remotely shutdown specific instances of ContactsLaw. This may be for the purposes of installing updates, performing maintenance, etc. The administrator user can supply their own message to the affected user(s) and determine the length of the countdown before ContactsLaw will close.

Note: This type of shutdown can only be initiated by your network administrator; there is no mechanism to allow CPMS staff to remotely close instances of ContactsLaw (unless we are your nominated network administrator).
